Health and hygiene

• Shaving gel/cream--disposable or electric razor, aftershave and perfume;

• Shampoo, conditioner, hair straightener, hair spray, gel;

• Soap, alcohol-based hand cleaner;

• Toothpaste, dental floss, and a supply of tooth brushes--for yourself or friends (Upper-class students tip: Dispose of your toothbrush after you get sick-to keep from being re-infected later.);

• Toiletries;

• Headache and sinus medication, and any special medication you may be taking;

• Bandages, tape, Band-Aids, cotton balls and swabs;

• Antiseptic;

• Makeup and makeup remover;

• Glasses (plus an extra pair), contact lenses and cleaning solution;

• Package of dust masks;

• Hand mirror (polished metal ones are unbreakable);

• Shower shoes, extra towels;

• Sun screen, mosquito repellent;

• Nail polish, remover, emery boards or nail file, clippers and super glue.

Laundry supplies you will need

• Detergent, softener, bleach;

• Laundry basket, possibly more than one; easy-to-store laundry bags for a small area;

• Clothes pins, plastic hangers, clothesline, or a drying rack;

• Lots of change for the washer and dryer (usually quarters).

Upper-class students advise: Watch for sales, buy in bulk, collect coupons, split the costs with your friends and/or roommate.

Special clothing and equipment

• Sun hat, bathing gear, sweater/ light jacket (even for summer), scarf, gloves, work/rubber gloves;

• Sunglasses, fanny pack, book bag, back pack, lightweight throw, blankets, slippers, camping gear, maps.

• Possibly a bicycle.

Notes: Your residence hall may have a snack area with vending machines for soft drinks and snacks. It may also have a kitchen with a microwave and refrigerator. If not, questions about bringing these and other major items will probably be answered at orientation. If your questions aren't answered at orientation, ASK!

If possible, share, share, share. Share as many things as possible with your roommate or friends -- from clothes, to food, to class notes. (Just not boyfriends or girlfriends, however. At that point, you've gone too far! LOL)

Oh...and don't forget. Whenever you lend something, kiss it goodbye. That way, if you get it back, it will be a nice surprise.

Happy Packing!
